The new Volkswagen Touareg, is the product of a partnership between VW and Porsche to co-develop a successful SUV platform. The result is a much more elegant SUV, and the first and only off-road capable vehicle in Europe built by a German car maker to be offered as a hybrid. The hybrid version is capable of reaching 62mph in 6.5sec or travel 30 miles on electric power alone.
The new Touareg will be 40 mm longer than its predecessor, yet up to 208kg lighter, and Volkswagen claim it will be better to drive, more refined, more economical and quicker than the outgoing model.
The leaner, more athletic body features more horizontal lines on the front end as well as distinctive headlights that give the new Touareg an unmistakable appearance at night. Inside the new Volkswagen Touareg, the cabin will be roomier than before, thanks to its bigger body and sliding rear seat.
There will be three engines available from launch; two diesels - a 3.0 V6 TDI, delivering 235bhp, and 405 lb of torque, which is set to be the big seller in the range, and a 4.2 V8 TDI, which delivers 335bhp, and 590 lb of torque; and the hybrid – a Supercharged 3.3 V6 TSI, with 328bhp and 265 lb of torque (374bhp and 428 lb of torque with the electric assist). As well as the hybrid drivetrain and the eight-speed gearbox and stop-start system fitted across the range, there’s the option of lane assist and departure warnings, active lights and air suspension with adaptive roll compensation.
All versions get permanent four-wheel drive, and like the old model, the new VW Touareg should be just as good off road as on. A Torsen limited slip differential is included as standard on all models, but customers can opt for a ‘Terrain Tech Pack’ that brings low ratio gearing and centre and rear differential locks, and the Area View camera package that gives multiple views of the car's extremities.
